  • Speed of defence review 'could put operations at risk'

The speed of a crucial review of the UK's defence and security needs could put combat operations at risk, the chair of an MPs' committee has said.

Tory James Arbuthnot said the Defence Select Committee was worried the process was money-driven and not taking time to assess the threats to the UK.

He said it was "potentially detrimental to the defence of the country".

Ministers said in an "ideal world" the process would take longer but there was an urgent need to tackle the deficit.

Asked about the impact of the review - and expected future defence budget cuts - on troop morale, Defence Minister Nick Harvey said Afghanistan remained the UK's top priority and nothing would be done to "cause alarm" to front-line operations.

  • Bulgaria expected to change EU Commission nominee

BRUSSELS, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Bulgaria is expected on Tuesday to withdraw Foreign Minister Rumiana Jeleva as its candidate to be in the next European Commission, sources in the European Union executive and the European Parliament said.
Parliamentarians raised questions about her qualifications and business background after a hearing last week in the assembly's development committee. Withdrawing her candidacy should help the Commission win an approval vote in the parliament on Jan. 26.
